Lions Progress in Playoffs After Eight-Try Thriller
Westhoughton Lions advanced to the next round of the playoffs with a pulsating 42-34 victory over Hindley in front of a vocal home crowd at The Den.
In a game that showcased attacking rugby at its finest, the Lions demonstrated their playoff credentials with a commanding performance led by hat-tricks from both Will Hall and Jordan Gibbons. Luke McMahon's precision with the boot proved crucial, successfully converting 6 of his side's tries.
The Lions started strongly, with Luke Waterworth crossing early to set the tone. Will Hall's hat-trick kept the scoreboard ticking over throughout the match, while Jordan Gibbons saved his best for last with three crucial tries in the closing stages that ultimately proved the difference.
Hindley showed great resilience throughout, with Callum Kennedy grabbing a brace and further tries from Cunliffe, Unsworth, Moore, and Morris keeping them in contention. Anthony Hart's accurate goal-kicking, landing 5 from 6 attempts, ensured the visitors remained within striking distance until the final whistle.
The victory, which sees Westhoughton progress in the playoffs, was built on strong performances across the park, with the half-back pairing of Ben Grindley-Roberts and Luke McMahon controlling the game well, while the forward pack, led by Callum O'Connor and Daniel Edwardson, provided the platform for their backs to shine.
Lions coach Sam Pennington praised his team's resilience: "It was a real test today against a tough Hindley side, but the lads showed great character, especially Jordan [Gibbons] coming up with those crucial tries late on. We'll take great confidence from this into the Grand Final next Saturday.
