The lads came away with a hard-fought victory in a close encounter that looked like it could go either way for much of the game.
Westhoughton made a slow start, with Burtonwood recovering a short kick-off and scoring from their opening set.
Josh Bentley-Hughes responded for the Lions, crashing over the line after some well-executed attacking shape. Luke McMahon added the extras to level the scores.
Burtonwood regained the lead with another try, but Jordan Gibbons powered through two defenders to score under the posts. Another successful conversion from McMahon brought the game level at 12-12 going into halftime.
Early in the second half, Burtonwood slotted a penalty following a tip tackle by Bentley-Hughes, which also saw him sent to the sin bin for 10 minutes.
Once back to a full 13 men, the Lions struck again—Brian Schofield ran a superb line through the middle to score. McMahon remained perfect with the boot, putting Westhoughton ahead 14-18 with 15 minutes remaining.
Burtonwood capitalised on an overlap to score in the corner shortly after, but the missed conversion left the scores tied at 18-18 with five minutes to play.
In the dying moments, the Lions forced a Burtonwood error deep in their own 20 metres, earning a scrum with a Lions feed. Tensions boiled over, and backchat from Burtonwood saw a penalty awarded. McMahon calmly stepped up and slotted it over, sealing a dramatic win in the final moments.
