Match Report
Westhoughton Lions A made the trip to Liverpool and came away with a battling 16-12 victory over a determined Lizards side.
Liverpool started the stronger of the two teams, getting over the line first to take an early lead. However, the Lions responded brilliantly, getting on the front foot and applying sustained pressure. It paid off when Jay Edwardson found space out wide to cross for Westhoughton’s opening try.
The Lions continued to press, and their second try came through smart work from Alex Hodgson, who scooted over from acting half close to the line to give the Lions the advantage.
Liverpool kept themselves in the game with a second try, but the Lions showed real composure when it mattered. Luke McMahon produced a brilliant chip-and-chase, regathering the ball himself before linking up with the supporting Scott Benyon, who finished the move to score a crucial third try for Westhoughton. McMahon also added two conversions from three attempts to help keep the Lions ahead.
While the Lions had further chances to put the game to bed, their defence became the defining factor, standing strong and refusing to let Liverpool back into the match.
Recognition from the opposition went to Scott Benyon, John Stryker, and Luke McMahon, who all played huge roles in securing the win.
This gritty performance shows the growing strength and belief in the Lions’ ranks as they continue to push forward this season.
