Westhoughton Lions 1st team hosted West Bank Bears in a thrilling contest that saw the home side claim a well-earned 36-22 victory. Despite a shaky start that saw West Bank cross early for a 0-4 lead, the Lions quickly found their rhythm, responding with a try from Ben Grindley-Roberts, converted by Jordan Gibbons to go ahead 6-4.
West Bank briefly reclaimed the lead at 6-8, but the Lions roared back. Will Robertson powered over for a crucial try, again converted by Gibbons to make it 12-8. Jordan Gibbons then added a try of his own, with Luke McMahon taking over the kicking duties and slotting the conversion for an 18-8 advantage.
Momentum stayed with Westhoughton as Alex Hodgson crossed the line and McMahon added the extras, pushing the lead to 24-8. The Bears fought back valiantly with two tries to narrow the gap to 24-18, threatening a late comeback.
However, McMahon’s calm penalty kick extended the lead to 26-18, relieving pressure and shifting momentum once again. Grindley-Roberts completed his brace shortly after, with another accurate conversion from McMahon taking the score to 32-18. The Lions’ final try came from Harry Hesketh, capping off a tireless performance, though the conversion was missed. A late West Bank try made it 36-22 at full time, but it was too little, too late.
The visitors acknowledged the Lions’ standout players, voting Ben Grindley-Roberts as their Man of the Match, followed by Jordan Gibbons and Harry Hesketh.
