Match Report
Westhoughton Lions A went down 26–34 to Chester Gladiators in a hard-fought contest that saw the home side rue a first-half riddled with errors. A lone try from Tony Eaton was the only highlight in an opening 40 minutes where mistakes and missed opportunities allowed Chester to build a solid lead.
The Lions came out firing after the break, rallying with a determined second-half effort that nearly turned the tide. Aaron Crielly crossed the whitewash twice in a powerful display, while Jamie Woodall and Jamie Blair added further tries. Josh Thompson chipped in with a single conversion.
Despite having the upper hand in the forwards, with the Lions’ pack consistently pushing back their opponents, the game was ultimately decided out wide. Chester’s bigger and more physical outside backs proved too much to handle, capitalising on space and defensive mismatches to keep the scoreboard ticking over.
Opposition Man of the Match honours went to:
1. Aaron Crielly – a constant threat with ball in hand and a two-try showing, overall dominant display in the pack
2. John Stryker – commanding presence in the middle
3. Tom Cain – controlled the tempo and made key contributions in attack
The Lions will take heart from their second-half resurgence but know a more composed opening is needed if they’re to convert performances into wins.
