Match Report
Westhoughton Lions A put in one of their strongest performances of the season, going toe-to-toe with high-flying Blackpool Scorpions in a tough, physical contest at home. Despite ultimately falling short 14-20, the Lions can take plenty of pride from a display that saw them dominate defensively and match their opponents for large spells.
The Scorpions struck first in the opening half, breaking the deadlock to go into the break 0-6 ahead. But Westhoughton came out firing in the second half, responding with real intent and pressure. Tries from John Stryker—impressive throughout in the back row—and Man of the Match Tom Cain brought the Lions back into the contest. The lads did suffer with injuries, being down to 1 single interchange left fit halfway through the second half.
Nicky Bullough, making a classy return to the side after a spell away, converted both tries and added a penalty to edge the home side in front at 14-12. His calm leadership and organisation at scrum-half helped steer the Lions into a position where an upset looked well on the cards.
However, with just minutes left on the clock, a costly error gifted Blackpool the field position they needed. The Scorpions capitalised with a late try and conversion to retake the lead 14-20 and see out the win.
Despite the result, this was a performance full of positives for the Lions, especially in defence, where they once again showed their grit and resilience against one of the league’s form sides. The loss sees Westhoughton stay in 7th place.
Opposition Man of the Match:
1. Tom Cain (9): Stood out for the Lions with an outstanding display in just his second game back from injury. Playing the full 80 minutes, his sharp distribution and tireless work around the ruck were key to the Lions’ performance.
2. John Stryker (11): A powerful and consistent threat in both attack and defence, Stryker’s try was a reward for a strong showing in the back row.
3. Nicky Bullough (7): The former club captain returned to action with a composed and intelligent performance at scrum-half, guiding the team around the field and kicking 6 vital points.
