Match Report
In front of a vocal home crowd, the A Team put on a clinical and composed display, outmuscling Liverpool Lizards in an entertaining clash that saw the hosts run in ten tries.
The tone was set early as Ben Sheelan opened the scoring with a powerful finish after sustained pressure. Moments later, Josh Thompson darted over for his first of the afternoon, showing sharp footwork and determination. The Lions continued to build momentum, with veteran back Scott Benyon crashing over for a try in what would be his final game for the club – a fitting farewell to a loyal servant of the team.
Jay Edwardson added to the tally with a clean break through the middle, before Derbyshire bagged his first, capitalising on a well-worked move on the right edge. At the break, the Lions had one hand on the result.
The second half brought more of the same intensity. Reece Derbyshire powered his way over for a second, followed shortly by elusive runs from both Will Robertson and Harvey Williams, who exploited tiring legs in the Lizards’ defence.
Rounding off the scoring was Jack Hesketh, who picked a great line to score from 10 meters out, sealing a dominant day for the Lions.
Kicker Nicky Bullough was dependable throughout, slotting 7 from 9 conversions. In a sentimental moment, Scott Benyon took the final kick of the day – and nailed it – ending his playing days with a smile and a perfect record on the tee.
The Lions will take pride not just in the scoreline, but in the way they executed their sets and supported one another defensively. The team now looks ahead to building on this performance as the season continues.
Man of the Match chosen by our opponents went to Nicky Bullough, with a standout performance at 7.
Next up for the A Team is Chester Gladiators Away, 19th July.
